What is Parkinson's Disease?
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive movement disorder of the central nervous system. PD causes a part of the brain, the basal ganglia, to deteriorate. This creates a decrease in the neurotransmitter (brain chemical) dopamine, which causes most symptoms.
Parkinson's Disease in Our Country
The prevalence of PD has doubled in the past 25 years. 90,000 people are diagnosed each year in the U.S. It is estimated that by the year 2030, 1.2 million people will be living with PD.
Causes:
- Unknown: There is no known cause
- Possible genetic and environmental causes
Risk Factors:
- Age: PD most commonly develops around age 60 or older
- Heredity: this is a small risk
- Sex: males are more likely to develop PS than women
- Exposure to toxins: herbicides and pesticides might be a small risk
